AT@T and Verizon smart phone buyers have a new "universal" iPhone 4 bumper that is available in Apple stores now. As reported by Alex Barrera on a video he has posted on YouTube.

Alex, who goes by the name Alerio, compares the newly designed model with an earlier version that Apple had come out with for the AT@T-model iPhone 4. This newer version is also compatible with the Verizon iPhone 4 who's switch to silence the phone is slightly lower than on the original AT@T model.

Both the older and newer bumpers are almost identical, as you can see on Alex's video, with the exception of the hole to accommodate the slightly different placement of the silencer button. The notches on the bottom and the sides of the iPhone 4 are the same on both the AT@T and Verizon models.

The original bumper was necessitated by the fact that the AT@T iPhone 4 released in June, which runs on a GSM 3G wireless network, would lose signal strength when making skin-to-phone contact with the left corner of the iPhone.

Apple gave away free bumper cases for about 3 months to help solve the problem, but as of yet neither AT@T nor Verizon have indicated whether or not buyers of the iPhone would get a free bumper with their purchase or not.

The only difference between the AT@T and Verizon iPhone 4 models are the antenna location which is a single notch on the top of the AT@T and 2 antenna notches on either side of the Verizon model presumed to allow for differences in Verizon's CDMA 3G network, which doesn't appear to affect the performance

Alex did not specify at which Apple store he purchased the newly designed "universal" bumper, and as of Friday Apple officials were not available to comment on the new video.

Well written article of this genre, David! I laughed at your response to Greg's comment. Yes, capitalism...
